Despite what my most recent blog posts may have suggested, life in Byron Bay isn’t aaallllllll about the fashion-set and Gypset living ;) It’s also a really fun place to hang out with kids of all ages and enjoy the simple pleasures that Australia’s most-Easterly town has to offer!
Without any further ado, here’s a simple list of the best 3 Family-Friendly things to do in Byron:
1. The Beach
First light, lunchtime swims, rainstorms, dog runs, sunset picnics. Is there any time of day that the beach doesn’t win? And in Byron Bay the beach is King. Forget about the shopping strip, it’s time to hit the sand. Start at Belongil or Main Beach, and then wander further along to Clarkes Beach and The Pass – especially if the kids want to surf. Wategos Beach is the jewel in the crown (with sleepy Little Wategos, tucked in under the lighthouse!) and the perfect way to waste away a Sunday but don’t leave without letting everyone run wild along Tallows‘ windswept shoreline.
All that beach-love and everyone will quickly work up a healthy appetite. Luckily Byron is prepared. Almost every establishment is family-friendly, there are lots of gluten-free/dairy-free options and babycinos are de riguer even for the tween-set. I highly recommend venturing out to The Farm or sitting on the grass in front of The Top Shop. Catching one of Byron Bay’s markets is a foodie must-do too, either early Thursday morning (the Farmers’ Market) or the big boy all-day on the 1st Sunday of each month. So much creative deliciousness in one place, yum.
3. Get Out of Town
A trip to Byron Bay isn’t quite complete if you don’t get out of town. Huh? Outrageous maybe ;) But, seriously, while Byron is a truly beautiful place to stay – you get to know it on another level when you venture out into the hinterland and it’s close coastal neighbours. The small towns of Brunswick Heads, Mullumbimby, Bangalow, Newrybar and Lennox Head are each fifteen-minute journeys that layer the Byron experience in different ways. Whether it’s dropping into the Brunswick skate park, going sailing on the dark tea-tree waters of Lake Ainsworth in Lennox, or grabbing coffee with a side of fun – kids love Abracadabra – in Bangalow, I highly recommend making sure you leave a day to explore the outer edges.
Byron Bay is unique. It’s a crazy melting pot with people from all corners of the globe coming together to enjoy something special. Something that’s kind of hard to put into words… but I hope these images go part of the way to describing it. And how awesome it is for kids of all ages.
