Following on from the world-class example he set at last year’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia – aka #MBFWA – designer of the moment Toni Maticevski opened this year’s proceedings Sunday afternoon at The Cutaway, Barangaroo Reserve, Sydney.
To an atmospheric soundtrack that somehow morphed effortlessly from bird calls to Justin Beiber’s I’ll Show You, models walked in almost trance-like patterns against an imposing raw sandstone backdrop.
This drama was echoed in the collection, with Maticevski’s dimensional abstract silhouettes punctured by dramatic accessories including wrist cuffs, bejeweled mouth gags, brazen statement necklaces, visible zippers and towering heels creating some kind of chaste-yet-foreboding sensual fairytale.
Fabrics bent and twisted in voluminous forms, then ran sleek and slim in pencil skirts and trouser sets, before exploding again in both form and colour. Glittering charcoals, black and silver were offered simultaneously alongside bold pops of canary yellow, pale duck-egg blue and the purest of pure whites.
Maticevski‘s vision is both international in its appeal and uniquely Australian in its delivery. His attention to detail and ability to manifest a dreamscape is remarkable to behold. Australia we have a maestro in our mix.
